Realistic HDR Workflow: Great Sand Dunes National Monument in Colorado

This photo of Great Sand Dunes National Monument and the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range, which I’ve been meaning to work on since Spring 2012, was created as a nine-exposure HDR (High Dynamic Range) image. I’m thrilled with how it turned out, especially because it was my first attempt using a new realistic HDR workflow I learned last summer. Read on to learn more about my workflow.

Honoring the Colorado Capitol Dome Exhibition

Who knew a simple act of kindness towards another photographer might lead to such great things as being included in an art exhibition honoring the Colorado Capitol Dome in Denver? That really is how my photo of the Colorado State Capitol came into existence. Here’s the story…

Olive in Brown Basket with Mom's Wedding Bouquet

Olive in Brown Basket with Mom’s Wedding Bouquet

A natural follow-up to adding weddings to my services in 2013 was newborn photography. My chance came with the arrival of Olive Jolie Paciotti the first week of November, daughter of Eric and Steph Paciotti, whose wedding I photographed during Colorado’s Great Flood in September 2013. Total joy was the experience of photographing Olive at 3-weeks-old and also getting a gorgeous family photo with her parents! Read the rest of this page »

Creating this cute little pretty princess photo of my great-niece, Bella, dressed up as Ariel from “The Little Mermaid” was a fun salvage of a less-than-mediocre phone picture. Read on to find out how you can turn “blah” family photos into little treasures like this!

Getting Started: Clearing Your Mind for Writing

How do I center myself and clear my mind prior to writing about photograhy? Today I received this fantastic question as a comment on one of my older posts, New Growth Springs From Old Growth.

Don’t Delete That Photo: Bring Life and Beauty to What Seems To Be a Throw-Away Photo

I’ve been taking photographs since I was six or seven years old and taking digital photos for fourteen years now. Thus, I have thousands and thousands of photos which seem to be “throw-aways.” Still, among them are countless images I just can’t bring myself to trash, because there is something special about them to me. Some are images of a treasured memory; others seem to have the latent possibility of a truly great image which simply hasn’t been brought to life yet. Read the rest of this page »

Breaking Out of the HDR Rut with Lightroom 5: Photomatix Pro vs. HDR Effects Pro vs. Lightroom 5

For quite some time, I’ve felt like I’ve fallen into the HDR rut and wanted to challenge myself to break out of the box of my routine HDR workflow. I’m proud that I “busted out” today and created this photograph which was enhanced solely using Adobe Lightroom 5 with no HDR processing whatsoever. In fact, the only adjustment was using highlight recovery:

Eric and Steph Engagement Photos – Western Style!

Steph, the Bride to Be

Steph, the Bride to Be

The first day I met my neighbor Eric’s girlfriend, Steph, I thought to myself, “She is the one – he is going to marry that girl!” I’m not sure how I knew… something about the way they both lit up around each other. I was thrilled when they recently got engaged and I am honored that they asked me to be their wedding and engagement photographer!

Eric and Steph’s wedding is being held at Peaceful Valley Ranch in Lyons, Colorado. The location is famous for western style weddings, so Eric and Steph decided to set the western tone right from the start with their engagement photos. We are talking cowboy boots, cowboy hats, a western style shirt for Eric, bandanas, and best of all, Eric’s toy cap gun! Oh, just wait, you’ll see… Read the rest of this page »
