Zapata Falls Frozen Wonderland – Take 2

Here is a full view of the magnificently frozen Zapata Falls, near Great Sand Dunes National Park in the San Luis Valley of Colorado.

I wish there were a way a photograph could do justice to how splendid this sight was. While the frozen solid left side of the falls looks true to how I saw it, it was much harder to do justice to the right side of the falls. That entire section of the falls was like a giant wall of icy glass lace, with the moving water visibly flowing behind it. It was extremely magnificent.

To give you a better sense of the grand scale of Zapata Falls, I am again including the photo from my previous post, showing how small my dog, Kiah, and I are at the base of the left side of the falls:

Zapata Falls proved to be far more than just a time-killing side trip while waiting for the best late day light to photograph Great Sand Dunes National Park. Rather, it is an exciting attraction of its own merit, and it was hard to leave when it was time for the best light at the Dunes! I will definitely return again to Zapata Falls.

Absolutely love your photos! My question is what time of year were they taken? I plan on visiting in the near future and wondered when is the best time to avoid the crowds. Thanks for any input!
